BLACK MONDAYS

Black Mondays
Curated by Thomas McDonell

For hundreds of years, disaster and violence have been the primary characteristics of “black” days. Specifically, the term “Black Monday” has referred to diverse catastrophes – from a 13th Century Gaelic massacre to 21st Century financial collapse. It is on “black” days that terrible things happen without warning – events so unexpectedly bad that we are dumfounded by their repercussions.

Right now, faced with multiple wars, financial meltdowns, ecological degradation, terrorism, racial conflict, and local scandal, every Monday seems like a Black Monday. Week after week, the bad news does not relent and the work of the artists featured in Black Mondays will reflect the darkness of our troubled time. But there is a Gramscian resolve in the work of these artists; the pessimism of their intellect does not break the optimism of their will. That which is sinister reveals that which is lovely and this complexity of the work, especially in concert, describes a landscape of possibility, even hope.

The exhibition will include work by John Alexander, Ashley Bickerton, Sebastian Black, Ernesto Burgos, Jake Cohen, Brooke Eberle, Griffin Frazen, Rico Gatson, Joseph Gergel, Richie Gergel, The Harlem Shakes, Judy Hudson, Scott Hug, LOLA, Haley Mellin,Tim Pierson, Nick Poe, Caroline Polachek, Aida Ruilova, Borna Sammak, Max Snow, Michael St. John, and Hunter Thompson.

Black Mondays will be open from May 11th through June 12th at Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts at 526 West 26th Street, New York, NY. There will be an opening reception on Monday, May 11th from 7 – 9pm.

You're so fucking cool you make me sick

i am trying my best to be a normal student, but those people around me are so fucking perfect, they are way better than me. i read something about inferiority complex na sometimes sa pagcocompensate mo at naoovercompensate nga nagkakaroon ng spectacular changes or achievements pero i dont see that to myself instead maraming discouragement ang nararamdaman ko feeling ko mapapagiwanan ako ng lahat. nakakainis isipin kaso wala na akong magagawa everyone is dynamic pero ako bakit static. magiging bulok na siguro ako habang buhay. sabi sakin ni Ning 'Nasa Role Confusion ka dudong try figure how to identify yourself and fit in no adapt in soceity' i ll take note of that and eventually sana makita ko ang path ko to my goal

Plus i saw this cool picture that tells alot on how i feel.

R.I.P. Rocco Morabito

My apologies, I'm a little late with my R.I.P.s this month (better late than never!). Rocco took one of the hottest moments in photo journalism on his way back to the newsroom in July of 1967 after covering a railroad strike. An unconscious, electrocuted utility worker was brought back to life by his co-worker - The Kiss of Life - earned him the first ever Pulitzer Prize for a news spot photo back in 1968.

FAIL.

Yemenwed's Episode 3

The art collective, Yemenwed has released their latest digital video, Episode 3 (there are stills in the current issue of K48: Starship Counterforce). Check it out!!

The video is a surreal Sci-Fi journey; part animation, part live action, part painting, part video game. The piece begins with Sigrid, the female protagonist, outfitted in leg splints and a cane, crossing a field of reeds as she approaches the looming presence of the Metronome building. Sigrid continues on to encounter powerful forces at play for the access of physical and spiritual transcendence, manifested in a cast of mythical objects and characters such as the Outsiders, an Offering Box, Hymnals, a Pew, the Prefects, the Psychic, a Coffin.

Taking queues from performance, ritual, dance and cinema, Episode 3 is an abstract meditation on multiplicity and transformation. Yemenwed states, "In the video the protagonist's identity, or body, is wed to how she inhabits the space, or how she is enveloped by it, rooted in the architecture, objects and characters she encounters."

Yemenwed Episode 3 is Gloria Maximo, Jonathan Turner, Shawn Maximo, Paul Kopkau, Jason Farrer, Megha Barnabas, Heather Kosch, Busy Gangnes, Kate Rosko, Natalie Lebrecht, Joseph Fraioli, David Santa Maria, Laura Foxman, Black Cracker, Peter Zuspan, Shannon Funchess, Nina Mehta, Abby Portner, and Krallice.
