Don't Forget Your Go-Bags

This weekend my friend and I took a fun field trip up to the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory for their Oceans of Discovery open house located about 30 minutes north of Manhattan on the Palisade Cliffs of the Hudson River. We both want to be marine biologist and have a thing for Jacque Cousteau and his fellow speedo wearing scientists.

Here's a computer mapping of 'Wild Spots'—there aren't many places left untouched by man.

While checking out some rocks in the seismology lab we met this rad kid and asked to take his photo with his favorite heavy metal. Later, we noticed him writing something on the chalkboard...

This dude seemed a little bored by the rock room. He was reading Deathlands... the world went out with a bang in the year 2001. America is now known as the Deathlands. Most places it’s pure hell. In others it’s worse. This series of books follows a group that is surviving this evangelist’s nightmare. The Deathlands are populated by all types of murderous mutants, and lagneumaniacs. The weather sports acid rains, and chemical tornadoes. The California coast is underwater. Washington, D.C. is a crater. Kind of like a vacation in Bosnia, only worse. The “war” unleashed everything in man's arsenal: Nuclear, biological, chemical, liquid, gas, airborne, even more nuclear, viral, engineered,—you name it, it was used. A really deadly stew of destruction and mayhem.

Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat

A song list from the 80s punk band the Minutemen with their wicked sense of humor... and a shot n' hung Minuteman from my home state.

Hogwarts—Minutemen Retreat

This is the place where all the magic happens. It's totally Muggle but, I like to pretend that I'm at Hogwarts and can cast spells like the Babbling Curse. It would have been a good one to use on the neo-nazi Bush supporting Minutemen who came last night to speak... After thanking Jesus Christ, opening speaker Marvin Stewart demanded, "ARE YOU READY to surrender your liberties?" Soon after, their fearsome leader Jim Gilchrist gets staged rushed by a bunch of pissed student protesters...

[Part of] the Statement released by "Those who occupied the stage:"

"... They are a racist, armed militia who have declared open hunting season on immigrants, causing countless hate crimes and over 3000 deaths on the border. Why should exploitative corporations have free passes between nations, but individual people not? No human being is illegal."

OUTSIDERS
Studies in the Sociology
of Deviance
Howard S. Becker
[A FREE PRESS PAPERBACK, 1963]

I found this paperback at my day job today... I work for a bunch of socs in this 250-year-old building on a balcony that feels like something out of Hogwarts. There's a chapter on Becoming a Marihuana User: Learning the Technique, Learning to Preceive the Effects and Learning to Enjoy the Effects... Becker's theory on outsiders and the way they are perceived has a lot to do with labeling... so, if someone calls you a fag or a dyke, just kick'em in the ass...

When I was a little boy, I used to have to go to this special room and meet with this teacher that looked like Abe Lincoln. He used to perform tests on me and ask me things like; "What do you think of when I say Bugs Bunny?" He'd take notes and, I guess, in the end his evaluation of me was that I didn't really fit-in with the other kids. So, I got to spend a year in a special ed class with other misfits. It was way better... we had hamsters and I remember these spinning racks of colorful paperbacks and magazines like Ranger Rick I used to try to read but couldn't but it didn't really matter anyway because I couldn't wait until after school when I would get to go with my Mom to the Beauty Bar.
